There are 4 ability levels of Help Mat in each resource pack.
Each Help Mat has:
- A centre section for the child to personalise their mat. This acts as a means of identification to prevent arguing but also supports the less able in spelling their name correctly on their work.
- Lower case alphabet line (displayed in sassoon primary font).
- 1 to 20 number line
- 100 square
- Days of the week
- Months of the year
- 'Words I get stuck on' space. When the Help Mat is laminated this can be used as a wipe clean space for adding words specific to each child which they need to focus on spelling correctly. This could also be used to record individual targets.
Adapted features of each mat:
- Spelling help - Each of the 4 mats contains different vocabulary taken from the National Literacy Strategy high frequency words lists. There is very discrete numbering in this section to assist in continuity and progression (however, all other elements of this resource such as layout and colours have been kept the same through each sheet to prevent children from feeling different to their peers). 1 = words taken from the reception year list; 2 = words taken from the Year 1 & 2 list; 3 = words taken from the Year 4 & 5 list. The 4th mat in the set has ambitious vocabulary in this section to encourage children of higher abilities to extend the vocabulary they use in their writing.
- Have you checked your work? - Each mat contains reminders for punctuation, spelling and checking for sense. Wording differs between the 4 mats to give children the best chance of using the prompts independently. Children are prompted to consider more advanced checks as they progress on to the next mat.
