Have you ever wasted precious classroom time using loop cards; trying to decide which card to give to which child?
Have you ever watched a child struggle with a question with all eyes in the class on them because the card they were randomly given was not their ability level?
I have been put off using loop cards because of these very issues, yet they can be an excellent way of engaging children in building their mental maths skills.
This set of loop cards is differentiated to avoid the problems identified above.
How are they differentiated? There are three colour coded skill levels within each set. Each card in the set has a brightly coloured border (in this instance plum). Within this border is a small star which indicates the skill level of the child holding the card (the answer they are expected to calculate is on this card - remember the question they read out is for someone else to answer.
Differentiation:
- Red Stars Cards with a red star in the corner should be given to higher ability children.
- Blue Stars Cards with a blue star in the corner should be given to the core group.
- Green Stars Cards with a green star in the corner should be given to your less able children.
This set of 32 multiplication loop cards includes:
- 10 red star level cards
- 14 blue star level cards
- 8 green star level cards
- 8 blank cards (2 red star; 4 blue star; 2 green star)
- A 3,5 & 7 Times Tables cover card to identify your set when stored.
The cards are sized 8 cards to an A4 page so they are easy to store.
Give them a challenge: Once they have had an initial run through, time how long it takes the class to complete the loop. Use a big timer such as one on the interactive whiteboard and then record their time on display in the classroom. Challenge them to beat it each time and even offer a reward when they do so. You will be surprised how much more effort they put in!
